The first decade in South Dakota was difficult but stable. Then came World War I. Hutterites refused military service and faced violent persecution — two young men, Joseph and Michael Hofer, died in military custody at Alcatraz and Fort Leavenworth in 1918 after brutal treatment. In response, virtually the entire Hutterite population moved to Manitoba, Canada in 1918, leaving only one colony in South Dakota.
